About Traditional Fishing (Mushta)
Mushta – A Traditional Shoreline Fishing Method in Suhili Village, Qeshm
Mushta is a traditional fishing method practiced along the shore in Suhili Village, Qeshm, where fishermen make use of the ebb and flow of the sea.
In this method, fishermen install wooden poles about three to four meters long, with nets stretched around them, forming a square or rectangular enclosure near the shore. During high tide, sea creatures move toward the shore and enter the enclosure. When the tide recedes, the fish are unable to return to the sea and are trapped in the nets, ready to be collected.
This technique, used for generations along the coasts of Hormozgan—including Suhili Village—is one of the easiest fishing methods. Without venturing out to sea, and without the risks or costs of offshore fishing, fishermen simply set up the Mushta and wait by the shore for the catch.
Today, this activity is recognized as an opportunity to experience the local culture and traditions of the area, and it often attracts the interest of tourists.
